The History of AFA Protective Systems: Over 150 Years of Fire Protection Innovation

Fire protection technology has evolved dramatically over the past century. Few organizations have been part of that evolution from the very beginning.

AFA Protective Systems, a Pavion company, traces its roots back to 1873, when the Automatic Signal Telegraph Company of New York City was incorporated under the Telegraph Company Act of 1848. At the time, cities were searching for more reliable ways to detect fires and quickly alert emergency responders.

Just two years later, the company helped pioneer a major advancement in emergency communication. In 1875, the Mayor of New York City requested that the company transmit fire alarm signals directly to Fire Department headquarters. This innovation created one of the earliest forms of centralized fire alarm monitoring and helped improve response times during emergencies.

This early milestone set the foundation for more than a century of innovation in fire detection, alarm transmission, and life safety systems.

Early Growth in Fire Alarm Technology

As cities grew and buildings became more complex, the need for reliable fire detection systems continued to expand.

In 1882, Watkins Automatic Signal Telegraph Company was incorporated in New York City. Shortly after, the organization evolved further when the corporate name changed in 1883 to Automatic Fire Alarm and Extinguisher Company, Ltd.

By 1900, the company adopted the name Automatic Fire Alarm Company. The focus remained clear. Develop reliable fire alarm technologies that could detect fires quickly and communicate emergencies efficiently.

In 1923, the company expanded its capabilities through the acquisition of United Alarm, a manufacturer known for its Aero fire detection systems. These advancements helped strengthen early fire detection technologies and further expand the company’s fire protection capabilities.

Expanding Central Station Fire Monitoring

Central station monitoring continued to play a critical role in fire protection throughout the twentieth century.

In 1948, Consolidated Fire Alarm Company and Boston Automatic Fire Alarm Company were consolidated with Automatic Fire Alarm Company of New York City. This consolidation strengthened the company’s position within the fire protection industry and expanded its service capabilities.

By 1953, AFA operated a central station in New York City at 416 Broome Street. The central station served as a critical hub for monitoring fire alarm signals and coordinating emergency response.

Ten years later, in 1963, the company expanded its central station operations to a location on 42nd Street in New York City. These facilities supported the continued growth of central station monitoring and the expansion of fire protection services.

The Creation of AFA Protective Systems

As the organization expanded its services beyond traditional fire alarm transmission, the company formally updated its identity.

In 1970, the corporate name changed to AFA Protective Systems, Inc. This change reflected the company’s growing capabilities in fire protection services, monitoring technologies, and system innovation.

Shortly after, the company introduced a major technological advancement. In 1971, AFA developed Centrak, the first multiplex signal transmission system. This technology represented a significant step forward in how fire alarm signals could be transmitted efficiently and reliably.

Innovations like Centrak helped pave the way for the advanced fire alarm communication technologies used in commercial buildings today.
