Why are Bi-Directional Amplifier Systems Important?

It’s very easy for emergency responders to lose communication with each other when radio signals are weakened, this is where a Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) system comes in. Buildings with metal framing, steel windows or concrete in their construction can block some two-way communication signals. A BDA system is necessary in order to enhance in-building radio frequency coverage for public safety radios.

BDA systems are signal boosters for buildings with poor Emergency Responder Radio System (ERRS) coverage. Some buildings have areas that minimize signal strength, called dead zones. Dead zones do not allow two-way radios to function properly, which can be dangerous with the many difficult challenges first responders face. Fire, EMT or Police personnel may not be able to signal each other for more assistance in dead zones.

Connection challenges take place throughout many facilities, especially in areas such as stairwells, parking garages, tunnels with concrete walls and elevator lobbies. BDA systems function throughout all these areas to amplify signals being both transmitted and received.

The installation of BDA systems helps improve the communication and safety of first responders who enter the building in the event of an emergency.

Benefits of a BDA System:

  • Safer First Responders
  • Improved Communication and Coordination of First Responders
  • Peace of Mind
  • Clear Reliable Radio Communication in and out of the building
  • Meeting Code Requirements

A BDA system in a building searches for a signal on the ERRS frequency in and around the structure. Once the wireless signal is located, the BDA system captures it and then proceeds to amplify and redistribute the signal to areas of the building with poor coverage. A high power, band selective radio signal booster system can be designed and customized to meet the unique needs of your building.

Many states have established new standards requiring an ERRS signal strength survey for commercial and large multi-dwelling residential properties as of a certain date.  Less than 100% signal coverage from the survey can require the installation of a full or partial BDA system. This applies to both existing buildings and new construction.  Examples of these structures that may need a BDA system include apartment buildings, airport terminals, government buildings, hospitals, hotels, parking garages, schools, stadiums, warehouses and other types of buildings where location or construction materials could cause first responders to lose two-way radio communication.
